Shri Virendra Tiwari, a 1990 Batch IFS (Indian Forest Service) Officer, retired at the level of Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF), Maharashtra took charge as Chairperson of the National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) on 05.09.2025. His journey in the Indian Forest Service began in the year 1990. Before joining NBA, he served as the Director of the prestigious Wildlife Institute of India (WII) from January, 2023 to June 2025.
Shri Tiwari, graduated from the University Department of Chemical Technology (UDCT) Mumbai. He has enormous experience in the fields of Forest, Wildlife Management and Biodiversity Conservation, Working Plan apart from the areas of Project Management, Public administration, Government Legislations, Goal Development and implementation issues.
He has demonstrated expertise in leading national and state-level initiatives, aligning biodiversity goals with international commitments and fostering stakeholder engagement for sustainable conservation practices. He has almost a decade of experience of working in the State Secretariat handling policy matters on forestry, wildlife and biodiversity. Apart from his contributions in the Mangrove Cell in Mumbai, he has actively worked in territorial, wildlife, working plan, budget and planning wings of the State.
He successfully lead the UNDP-GCF Project “Enhancing Climate Resilience of Coastal Communities in India”; Declaration of Thane Creek as a Ramsar Site. During his tenure as Director, WII, he actively involved himself in policy-research interface and provided technical expertise to MoEFCC on various International Agreements and collaborations, Capacity-Building and Knowledge Sharing initiatives.
